What happened
Our client was riding their electric moped on the way to see their children. When a police car approached with its sirens on, they pulled over to the left.
A passing driver checked only their right-hand mirror and pulled sharply left alongside them. The car’s rear door handle caught the moped’s handlebar, dragged our client forward and dropped them onto their left side.
Our client was left with pain all over their body and severe anxiety about driving.

How we helped
Solicitors at NJS Law brought the claim against the driver’s insurer. We showed that the driver moved left without checking, into a rider who had already pulled over, and arranged independent medical reports on the physical injuries and the anxiety.
We then negotiated until the claim was resolved.

The outcome
Our client received £27,500 in compensation.

Questions people ask
What should drivers do when an emergency vehicle approaches?
The Highway Code says drivers should look and listen for emergency vehicles and help them pass, but without putting other road users at risk. That includes checking mirrors and blind spots before moving over, rather than swerving into the space around them.
Can I claim for anxiety about driving or riding after an accident?
Yes. Psychological effects, including anxiety about getting back on the road, can form part of a claim alongside physical injuries. An independent medical report sets out how the accident has affected you.
