Injured as a Passenger When a Bus Hit the Vehicle in Front

Our client was not driving. They were sitting on a bus, going about an ordinary journey, when the driver collided with the vehicle in front.

What happened

The impact left the client with injuries to the neck, back and leg, cuts inside the mouth, and the loss of a tooth. None of it was their fault. All of it was disruptive — dental treatment on top of physical recovery, and the ordinary business of daily life to keep going in the meantime.

Passengers are in an unusual position after a collision. They had no control over the vehicle, no ability to see the hazard coming, and often no idea whether they are entitled to anything at all.

What we did

There was no vehicle of the client's to repair here, so this was a claim matter from the outset. They got in touch, and NJS Law took it on from there — no jargon, no chasing, just someone in their corner who explained what was happening and when.

The outcome

NJS Law secured £3,500 in compensation for the client.

Every claim is different. This outcome reflects the specific circumstances and injuries in this case and is not an indication of what any other claim may be worth.

Can a bus passenger claim compensation after a crash?

Yes. If you were injured as a passenger through no fault of your own, you may be able to claim — and because a passenger is almost never responsible for a collision, these claims are often more straightforward on liability than others. It does not matter whether the bus driver or the other driver was at fault; the claim is directed at whoever was responsible.

Do I need to have reported it to the bus company?

It helps enormously if the incident was reported at the time and there is a record of it, but a lack of one is not the end of the road. Medical records, witness details and CCTV — which many operators hold, though usually only for a limited period — can all support a claim. If you were injured on a bus, it is worth acting sooner rather than later while that evidence still exists.
