NON-FAULT ACCIDENT. NO COST TO YOU

Non-Fault Accident Vehicle Repairs - Managed Start to Finish

We manage the whole repair for you. We arrange the inspection, place your vehicle with a repairer, agree the work with the at-fault driver’s insurer, and keep you updated while it is off the road. Back on the Road UK is a trading style of NJS Law Limited, so if the insurer disputes the bill, the people who take that on are already on your side of the table.

Who pays for Repairs After a Non-Fault Accident?

If the accident was not your fault, the at-fault driver’s insurer is responsible for the cost of repairing your vehicle. That is the principle behind the whole process: you are entitled to be put back in the position you were in before the collision, so far as money can do it.

In practice that means we invoice the at-fault insurer directly for the repair, not you. You do not pay an excess, because you are not claiming on your own policy. And because you are not claiming on your own policy, there is no automatic hit to your no-claims discount for the repair itself.

The alternative route — going through your own comprehensive cover — works, but it usually costs you the excess up front and puts a claim on your record while your insurer tries to recover from the other side. Some people prefer that route, and it is a legitimate choice. We will explain both honestly and let you decide.

How Our Repair Process Works - Step by Step.

STEP 1

Tell us what happened.

One phone call. We take the registration numbers, the date, the location and a short description. If you have photographs or a dashcam file, we will ask for those — but do not worry if you have neither.

STEP 2

We confirm liability with the other side.

One phone call. We take the registration numbers, the date, the location and a short description. If you have photographs or a dashcam file, we will ask for those — but do not worry if you have neither.

STEP 3

Inspection and estimate.

Your vehicle is inspected and a repair estimate is produced. If the damage is severe enough that the vehicle may not be economical to repair, we tell you at this point rather than letting you find out weeks later. See what happens if your car is written off.

STEP 4

Repairs carried out.

The work is done by a vetted repairer using parts appropriate to your vehicle’s age and specification. We stay in contact with the bodyshop so you do not have to.

STEP 5

Return and settlement.

Your vehicle comes back to you, and we pursue the repair cost from the at-fault insurer. If they underpay or dispute the invoice, that becomes our problem to argue, not yours.

Will I Have a Car While Mine Is Being Repaired?

In most non-fault cases, yes. Where you have a genuine need for a vehicle and the other driver is at fault, we can arrange a replacement on credit hire for the period your car is off the road — usually a like-for-like vehicle rather than the smallest thing on the forecourt.

There are conditions attached, and there is one important thing you need to understand about how credit hire works before you agree to it. We explain that in full on the dedicated page.

Do I Have to Use the Insurer’s Approved Repairer?

No. If you are not claiming on your own policy, you are not bound by your own insurer’s approved network — and the at-fault driver’s insurer has no right to dictate where your car is repaired. They will often suggest their own network, because it is cheaper for them. That is their interest, not yours.

What matters is that the repair is carried out properly, to an appropriate standard, and at a reasonable cost. A repairer’s own manufacturer approvals matter more than whose list they appear on — particularly on newer vehicles with driver assistance systems that need recalibrating after a bumper or windscreen replacement.
