Straight road. Right of way. Nothing out of the ordinary — until a driver pulled out of a side road without stopping and collided with our client, who was riding a rented bicycle at the time.
What happened
One ordinary journey, turned upside down in a second. The physical and practical fallout of a cycling collision does not stop at the injury: it follows into work, into daily routine, and into a recovery period that most people have not planned for. There is also the awkward question of the bike itself, which in this case was a rental rather than the client's own.

Who is at fault when a driver pulls out of a side road?
A driver emerging from a side road onto a main road must give way to traffic already on it — and that includes cyclists. Failing to stop or to look properly before emerging is one of the most common causes of cycling collisions in the UK. Liability still turns on the facts of each case, but a cyclist proceeding normally along a main road with right of way starts from a strong position.
What if I was riding a hire bike or rental bike?
It makes no difference to your personal injury claim. Your right to claim for injury comes from the fact that someone else's negligence hurt you, not from who owns the bicycle. Damage to the bike itself is handled separately — the hire operator's terms will usually govern that, and it's worth telling them about the incident promptly.
